As part of #Groundsweek, Day 3 is dedicated to recognising the incredible perseverance and community spirit of Swansea Bay Sports Association and the wider cricket community in Swansea.

"Over the last 18 months, Swansea’s cricket community has faced major uncertainty and upheaval. Swansea Cricket Club and Swansea Civil Service Cricket Club two organisations with more than 300 years of history between them have had to navigate the challenge of leaving long-standing home grounds and rebuilding for the future. This disruption has been driven by wider redevelopment pressures, including the changes at St Helen’s Rugby and Cricket Ground and the broader plans for the site.
St Helen’s is not just “a ground” to Swansea it is part of cricket’s living heritage. It’s hosted some of the greatest names in the sport, and it is famously where Sir Garfield (Garry) Sobers hit six sixes in an over on 31 August 1968, a moment etched into world cricket history. BBC Sport
Through this period, Swansea Bay Sports Association has represented what grassroots sport needs most: steady leadership, advocacy, and a commitment to ensuring that sport doesn’t disappear when circumstances change. In my view, their impact is best seen in the determination of local cricket to survive and progress supporting clubs, volunteers and players to stay focused on what matters: keeping cricket played, accessible, and thriving in Swansea.
Despite the disruption, there is now a clear pathway forward. Swansea Council has set out a major £1.1m transformation of Bishop Gore playing fields into a new cricket hub, with a new grass square, modern clubhouse, and training facilities supporting the merged future of Swansea Cricket Club and Swansea Civil Service Cricket Club, with completion scheduled for end of March 2026.
This nomination is therefore about more than recognising the past (important as that is). It’s about rewarding the perseverance, determination, and community-first mindset that Swansea Bay Sports Association embodies helping local sport come through a rocky time stronger, not smaller."
From all of us at Auto-Roller, thank you to Swansea Bay Sports Association and everyone who has worked tirelessly to ensure the future of cricket in Swansea remains bright!
